Jailbreak Crisis: 4,643 Escaped Inmates, Including Boko Haram Commanders And Murderers, Still At Large
In the past five years, no fewer than 6,675 inmates, including high-profile Boko Haram terrorists and convicted murderers, have escaped in 13 jailbreaks across various Nigerian custodial centers. Of these escapees, 2,032 (30.4%) have been recaptured by security operatives, while 4,643 (69.5%) remain at large.
The most recent jailbreak occurred in Borno State on Tuesday, when 280 inmates fled the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre after severe flooding caused part of the perimeter fence to collapse. Some Boko Haram commanders were among the escapees, according to an anonymous official.
The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, expressed serious concern over the possibility of Boko Haram leaders being among those who escaped. He noted the state’s ongoing rehabilitation efforts, with over 200,000 insurgents and their families reportedly having repented in the last two years, contributing to peace in the region.
Despite ongoing efforts to upgrade older prison facilities, jailbreaks have become a frequent occurrence, exacerbating criminality across the country. Security experts have raised concerns that escaped inmates, including those who have not been rehabilitated, may return to criminal activities, fueling terror attacks, kidnappings, and killings nationwide.
