JUST IN: Court Gives Former Senator, Father Life Sentence (SEE WHY)

In a high-profile murder case, Moscow City Court sentenced former Russian senator Rauf Arashukov and his father, Raul, to life in prison.

According to RT, the former lawmaker was detained in 2019 while attending a parliamentary session.

At the time, the detention was personally led by the prosecutor general, Yury Chaika, and the head of the Investigative Committee, Aleksandr Bastrykin.

During the same session as his arrest, fellow senators voted to strip him of parliamentary immunity.

The trial judge, who had previously found the ex-senator and his father guilty of plotting the murder of Aslan Zhukov, the deputy head of a local youth movement, sentenced them to life in prison.

On Tuesday, the judge stated, “The court does not see any obstacles to sentencing Raul and Rauf Arashukov to life in prison.”

At the time of his murder, Zhukov was also an aide to Fral Shebzukhov, the leader of Russia’s southern Karachay-Cherkessia region.

According to the RIA Novosti news agency, only one juror believed that the two men’s guilt had not been sufficiently proven and that they deserved leniency.

Raul Arashukov was also convicted of stealing more than 4.4 billion rubles ($62 million) from Russian energy giant Gazprom.

In September, the jury found both men guilty of forming a criminal organization with the intention of stealing 30 billion rubles ($425 million) from the company.

The Arashukovs’ cars, including a Bentley and a rare Soviet Chaika, were seized by the court. In connection with the case, 18 other suspects were put on trial.

Both men denied any wrongdoing. Rauf, 36, was known as Russia’s youngest senator between 2016 and 2019, representing the Karachay-Cherkessia Region. Raul, his father, was once a gas tycoon.

After a hitman from a group that carried out one of the murders turned himself in in August 2018, Arashukov Jr. was revealed as one of the organizers of a contract killing.

The senator’s arrest triggered a large-scale police operation that included searches in several Russian cities.
