JUST IN: Supreme Court Affirms Lawal As PDP Gov Candidate In Zamfara

The Supreme Court has confirmed Dauda Lawal as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Zamfara State.

The confirmation comes four days before the state’s governorship election on March 11, which is scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The five-member panel of Justices unanimously dismissed an appeal filed by another governorship candidate, Dr Ibrahim Gusau, against the nomination.

In the lead judgment delivered by Justice Adamu Jauro, the Supreme Court upheld submissions of the Counsel to Lawal, Damian Dodo, that his client was legally and lawfully nominated in line with the provisions of the law.

Justice Jauro upheld the judgment of the Court of Appeal Sokoto, which had endorsed the second primary election that produced the candidate on January 6, this year.

Lawal won the primary election with 442 votes, defeating Dr Ibrahim Gusau and other candidates.

Justice Jauro ruled that a Federal High Court in Gusau that nullified the primary elections twice lacked jurisdiction when it heard Dr Gusau’s suit.

On June 6, the Court of Appeal Sokoto Division upheld the primary election that produced Dr. Dauda Lawal as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the March 11, 2023, governorship election in Zamfara State.

The first PDP governorship primary election, held on May 25, 2022, was challenged and declared null and void by a Federal High Court in Gusau.

In its judgment, the High Court ordered a new primary election, which was held on September 23, 2022, but was also quashed by the same court for irregularities.

Lawal, Adamu Maina-Waziri, Chairman of the Primary Election Committee, and retired Col. Bala Mande filed an appeal with the Appeal Court after being dissatisfied with the High Court decision.
