JUST IN: Tribunal Declares Ex-Plateau Gov. Lalong Winner Of Senatorial Election

Simon Lalong

The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Jos, Plateau State, has affirmed Simon Lalong, a former governor of the state and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the legitimate representative for Plateau South senatorial district.

Chairman of the three-member panel, Justice Mahmoud Tukur, stated that the votes garnered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Napoleon Bali, in the February 25 election were considered wasted votes due to his invalid nomination.

The unanimous decision on Monday emphasized that at the time of nomination, the PDP lacked a valid structure in the state. Regarding allegations of over-voting and non-compliance with electoral laws, the panel concluded that the petitioners failed to substantiate these claims.

Similarly, the PDP conceded the Barkin-Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency seat to Labour Party (LP) candidate, Dalyop Chollom.

The tribunal determined that Peter Gyenden of the PDP was not validly nominated at the time of his selection, citing his party’s lack of a valid structure in the state.
