Kano Road Crash Leads To 112kg Cannabis Seizure By NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano State Strategic Command, has seized 150 blocks and three sacks of cannabis sativa, weighing a total of 112 kilograms.

The interception followed a road accident at Gadar Tamburawa on the Zaria-Kano expressway. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday in Kano.

He explained that the incident occurred around 6 a.m. on September 6, when NDLEA operatives on patrol heard a loud collision involving a Volkswagen Golf and a truck. “Officers immediately rushed to the scene to rescue the occupants of the Golf, removing its windscreen, window, and door to extricate the driver and passenger,” he said.

Muhammad-Maigatari added that the passenger attempted to flee the scene after being freed but was promptly apprehended by the operatives. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 150 blocks and three sacks of loose cannabis sativa totaling 112 kilograms.

The driver, who is currently receiving medical treatment, confessed to representing the consignor and admitted to making similar deliveries both within and outside Kano. He also revealed that he deliberately used a one-way route to evade NDLEA checkpoints.

Initial reports indicated that the truck driver sustained fractures in the crash. Muhammad-Maigatari noted that the incident involved two offenses: one-way driving that led to the collision and trafficking in narcotics.

He affirmed that under the leadership of State Commander Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, the command would pursue prosecution of those involved in the drug trafficking operation. The spokesperson also praised the prompt and professional response of the patrol officers in rescuing the occupants, apprehending suspects, and recovering the drugs.

Muhammad-Maigatari attributed the success of the operation to the effective leadership of NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd.), and urged members of the public to refrain from drug trafficking while reporting any suspicious movements of illicit substances to the agency.
