Lagos Directs Banks And Eateries To Provide Public Access To Toilets

According to Ireporter Online, the Lagos State Government has directed filling stations, banks, eateries, and other public-facing establishments to open their restrooms to members of the public as part of intensified efforts to curb open defecation across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed on Saturday that the state currently operates 1,710 public toilets strategically located across Lagos to serve residents and visitors. He, however, noted that government intervention alone is not sufficient to address the sanitation challenge.

“As part of our sustained efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve public sanitation across Lagos State, we currently have 1,710 functioning public toilets strategically located across the state for residents and visitors,” Wahab stated.

He further emphasized the need for private sector involvement, urging businesses such as filling stations, banks, eateries, and similar establishments to allow public access to their restroom facilities where feasible.

“Government cannot do this alone. We are encouraging businesses such as filling stations, banks, eateries, and other public-facing facilities to make their restrooms accessible to the public where possible. This collaborative approach will significantly complement government efforts and expand access to sanitation facilities across the state,” he added.

The directive is part of broader sanitation enforcement measures currently being implemented in the state, with authorities confirming that individuals caught engaging in open defecation are being arrested and prosecuted in line with existing laws.

“These measures are necessary to protect public health, preserve dignity, and maintain a cleaner environment for all,” the statement noted.

Wahab reiterated that sanitation remains a shared responsibility, calling on both residents and business owners to support government initiatives aimed at improving environmental conditions and expanding sanitation infrastructure across Lagos.

“While government continues to expand infrastructure, residents and businesses must also play their part in ensuring Lagos remains clean, safe, and habitable,” he said.
