has stopped operations, leaving many questioning the true effectiveness of the extensive renovation.

Our correspondent’s visit on December 19, 2024, revealed a deserted site, with no petrol being lifted from the refinery’s 18-arm loading bay. Tankers that were once busy hauling fuel were nowhere to be seen, with only a few trucks parked idly along the road leading to the facility.

The news follows the high-profile inauguration of the facility in late November, where the CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, unveiled the revamped plant with great fanfare. However, stakeholders have raised concerns that the recent loading activities were limited to old stock from storage tanks, casting doubt on the true progress made.

While there was a brief period of product movement, with around 11 trucks loading at one point, the refinery’s operation has quickly reverted to its previous status quo. Workers have returned to their posts, but there has been little action beyond idle waiting, fueling speculation that the refinery may not be fully operational.

A petroleum product marketer, Mr. Dappa Jubobaraye, voiced his frustration, claiming that the entire rehabilitation project may have been a well-executed show to mislead the public. According to him, the refinery’s long-term functionality remains in doubt as only a fraction of the loading arms are operational, and essential operations like kerosene and diesel loading have yet to commence.

As the situation continues to unfold, many Nigerians are left wondering if this $1.5 billion investment will truly serve the purpose it was intended for, or if it will go down as another costly failure in the country’s oil sector.
