Maiduguri Blast Update: Police Confirm 23 Dead, 108 Injured

The Nigeria Police Force in Borno State has confirmed that at least 23 people lost their lives while 108 others sustained injuries following a series of explosions that struck Maiduguri on Monday evening. Authorities described the incident as coordinated suicide attacks executed across multiple locations within the city.

According to Ireporter Online, security officials disclosed that the explosions occurred around 7:24 p.m., targeting densely populated and strategic areas, including the Monday Market Maiduguri, the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover. Preliminary findings, as revealed in a statement by Police Public Relations Officer Nahum Kenneth Daso, indicate that the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers using improvised explosive devices.

Security authorities noted that the near-simultaneous nature of the blasts has heightened concerns over the evolving strategies of insurgent groups operating in Nigeria’s North-East region. The selection of targets—a major commercial hub, a healthcare facility environment, and a busy transport route—was believed to be aimed at inflicting mass casualties, triggering widespread panic, and disrupting economic activities.

In response, a joint security operation involving police tactical teams, military personnel, and other agencies was immediately deployed to the affected areas. The locations were secured and cordoned off, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit conducted thorough sweeps to eliminate any remaining threats. The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, led an on-the-ground assessment of the impacted sites, where he sympathized with victims and reassured residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, collaborated with medical teams to evacuate the injured to hospitals across Maiduguri, where they are currently receiving treatment. Authorities stated that measures are underway to restore normalcy, with an increased security presence across the city and neighboring communities.

Residents have been advised to remain calm but vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to security agencies. The police also praised the cooperation and resilience of the public, reiterating their dedication to maintaining peace and stability in the state.
