Malami Hits Out At EFCC As Properties Tagged In Abuja
Former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of unlawfully marking several properties linked to him in Abuja. According to Ireporter Online, Malami’s media aide, Mohammed Bello Doka, said EFCC operatives, accompanied by armed security personnel, invaded some of his buildings and offices on Monday morning and reportedly detained two individuals during the operation.
Malami insisted that the interim forfeiture order cited by the EFCC had expired. He emphasized that the court order, granted on January 6, 2026, was valid for only 14 days and had lapsed. He further stated that no valid court order was presented to authorize the EFCC’s actions on Monday.
“The matter remains before the court. The case instituted by the EFCC at the Federal High Court, Abuja Division (Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/20/2026), is ongoing. The court has not made any final determination, and no order authorizing the invasion and marking of the premises was granted,” the statement read.
Malami’s statement described the EFCC’s actions as a “forceful takeover” that violated due process and legal procedures. The former AGF also noted that the interim forfeiture order had been time-bound and could not justify the EFCC’s activities.
Earlier in January, a federal high court in Abuja ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 properties allegedly linked to Malami and his two sons, Abdulaziz Malami and Abiru Rahman Malami, suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities. The court had directed the EFCC to publish the order in a national newspaper, allowing interested parties 14 days to show cause against a final forfeiture order.
In February, Malami challenged the interim forfeiture of the properties. He is currently standing trial on separate criminal charges filed by both the EFCC and the Department of State Services (DSS). Malami was recently released on bail in the alleged terrorism case filed by the DSS.
