MDCN Cautions New Doctors On Social Media Misconduct, Warns Of Possible Sanctions

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has issued a stern warning to newly inducted medical and dental practitioners, urging them to exercise caution on social media and uphold professional conduct. According to the Council, breaches of ethical standards may attract strict disciplinary action.

Registrar of the Council, Fatima Kyari, conveyed the warning through Deputy Registrar Dr. Abdul Enejer during the induction of 51 medical doctors and dental surgeons at the University of Ibadan. Kyari emphasized that the medical profession demands the highest levels of responsibility and decorum, both offline and online.

She cautioned that inappropriate online behaviour, misrepresentation of professional status, or any form of unprofessional conduct could result in sanctions. “The Council actively monitors practitioners and will enforce ethical standards whenever breaches are detected,” she said. Kyari added that the expectations placed on medical professionals extend beyond those of the general public, requiring consistent discipline and sound judgment.

Highlighting the significance of induction, Kyari noted that it marks the start of a lifelong commitment to ethical conduct, accountability, and service to humanity. She stressed that misconduct could tarnish not only individual reputations but also public trust in Nigeria’s healthcare system. She also warned against falsely claiming full registration as a doctor, describing it as a serious violation that could compromise future career prospects.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Kayode Adebowale, represented by the Provost of the College of Medicine, Temidayo Ogundiran, described the ceremony as “a celebration of victory over adversity,” acknowledging the graduates’ resilience and perseverance. He encouraged the new doctors to contribute positively to institutional development and initiatives such as the Global Sponsor Student Programme and the Student Building Project.

Similarly, the Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, urged the inductees to uphold integrity, humility, and professionalism while embracing continuous learning in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment. He highlighted the importance of discipline, adaptability, and collaboration, noting that their conduct represents both their institutions and the Nigerian medical profession internationally.

Reflecting on the graduates’ journey, the Dean of Clinical Sciences, Professor Taiwo Lawal, commended their courage and perseverance, describing resilience as essential for success in medical practice. He expressed confidence that their dedication during training would sustain them throughout their careers and urged them to remain committed to professionalism, service, and lifelong learning.
