Lionel Messi and his Argentina teammates left Tuesday’s open-top bus run via helicopter amid wild 2022 World Cup trophy celebrations in Buenos Aires.

Argentina returned to their homeland in the early hours of Tuesday morning after being crowned World Champions with a penalty shootout victory over France in the Qatar final, and were greeted by thousands of enthusiastic fans at the airport. Messi was the first to emerge from the plane with the World Cup trophy in his hands, the only title he had not won in his illustrious career.

The Argentine government has declared a national holiday to commemorate the victory, saying in a statement: “The Argentine National Team, representing this country, won the World Cup in Qatar on December 18, 2022. As a result of the foregoing, it is appropriate to declare December 20, 2022 a national holiday in order for the Argentine people to express their deepest satisfaction with the national team and speak out in support of sport and the homeland.”

After landing in Buenos Aires, Messi and his teammates boarded an open-top bus and paraded through the streets of the Argentine capital, showing off their World Cup trophy to their adoring fans. It is estimated that up to four million people turned out to greet them, forcing the bus to be rerouted due to congested roads and highways, and eventually prompting a helicopter exit.

Their journey was supposed to end at the Obelisco, Buenos Aires’ iconic national monument, but they couldn’t get there because of the crowds.
