Naira Woes Addressed: CBN Governor Teams Up with President Tinubu to Stabilize Currency

The Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Folasodun Shonubi, has revealed that the apex bank is set to introduce a range of strategies to restore stability to the Naira.

Following a meeting at the State House on August 14, Shonubi conveyed that President Bola Tinubu is deeply concerned about the consistent depreciation of the Naira, prompting a concerted effort to address the situation.

Shonubi underscored that much of the volatility in the parallel market is spurred by speculative demand, and not solely by economic fundamentals. He detailed that during the discussion, President Tinubu expressed his worries about the ripple effects of the Naira’s fluctuations on the average citizen, as many local activities continue to be pegged to parallel market exchange rates.

The Acting Governor shared, “We have discussed and I have shared with him what we’re doing to improve supply. If you look at the official market, you will find that that market has been fairly stable and the spreads of the difference have not fluctuated as much.”

While he refrained from unveiling specific details, Shonubi alluded to forthcoming plans that would directly impact the market dynamics and render speculative activities less advantageous. He cautioned that the actions being taken could lead to substantial losses for speculators.

Shonubi’s presence at the meeting underlines President Tinubu’s concerns about the Naira’s trajectory and the need for decisive action to safeguard the economy. The ongoing collaboration between the central bank and the government aims to enhance the efficiency of the environment while minimizing negative implications for citizens.

“The intention is to ensure the environment operates at a level that’s more efficient, but also that is also very reasonable and does not have a negative impact to the best that we can on the lives of the average person,” Shonubi emphasized, highlighting the commitment to restoring stability and promoting the well-being of the populace.
