The holidays, which should be about togetherness and abundance, have turned into a bitter reflection of harsh economic realities. In Lagos, a 50kg bag of rice—once a household staple—now costs an astronomical sum. In Abuja, the price has skyrocketed to N100,000, making this essential food item a distant luxury only for the rich.

The tragic consequences of Nigeria’s food crisis became tragically clear this Christmas season. Over 75 Nigerians lost their lives in a desperate scramble for rice across various states—Abuja, Ibadan, and Anambra. In these dire moments, the usual excitement of Christmas trees and new clothes was replaced by the haunting reality of survival—children crushed in stampedes, not in pursuit of holiday cheer, but in search of something to eat.

The removal of the fuel subsidy has worsened the plight of millions, driving up transportation costs and making basic goods nearly impossible to afford. A live chicken now costs between N30,000 and N40,000, while turkeys have become a symbol of unattainable wealth, priced at an eye-watering N100,000 to N180,000.

Travel, which was once a joyful part of the season, has also become an unattainable luxury for many. Family gatherings have been replaced by somber WhatsApp photos of distant relatives, as the cost of travel prevents many from returning home for the holidays.

This Christmas, families made do with what they had—rice without chicken, water in place of soft drinks, and the memories of richer, happier times. And yet, we managed to make light of our circumstances, joking about how our meatless stews could be the latest trend in veganism. In this new reality, we’ve had to create new traditions, built on the spirit of Christmas that refuses to be measured in Naira.

As 2024 closes, we look to the future with a heavy heart, wondering whether Christmas will forever be marked by what we cannot afford. Yet, we hold on to hope that someday, we will rediscover the joy, glory, and true meaning of the season.
