NARD Strike : LHI Advocates For Urgent Action In Addressing Healthcare Challenges

Dear fellow citizens, it is with great regret that I inform you that the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) in Nigeria has commenced a strike today, 26th July 2023.

This unfortunate situation means that government-owned hospitals in Edo State and other states across Nigeria will be without trainee doctors to attend to patients. For those unaware, it is crucial to understand that approximately 70 percent of doctors in government hospitals, which serve the majority of Nigeria’s population, are either trainees or resident doctors.

Below are the demands listed by them, aimed at facilitating their ability to provide holistic care for their patients. 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾

Demands are:

1. Immediate payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund, MRTF

2. Immediate release of the circular on one-for-one replacement

3. Payment of skipping arrears

4. Upward review of Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS)  in line with full salary restoration to the 2014 value of CONMESS

5. Payment of the arrears of consequential adjustment of minimum to the omitted doctors

6. Reversal of the downgrading of the membership certificate by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN)

7. Payment of MRTF, new hazard allowance, skipping and implementation of corrected CONMESS in State Tertiary Health Institutions

8. Payment of omitted hazard allowance arrears

Nonetheless, LHI firmly emphasizes the need for the Federal Government of Nigeria, along with all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), to demonstrate a serious commitment to understanding the significance of the healthcare ecosystem in the country’s development. It is imperative that they proactively address the concerns of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) and, by extension, resolve all issues within other healthcare professional associations promptly. The well-being of “Nigerian Patients” demands urgent attention, and the government should act swiftly as they are undeniably worth it.
