Dr. Gaza Gwamna, the State Commissioner for Health, announced this collaborative effort during an inspection visit to the Nasarawa State Drugs and Supplies Management Agency (NASDSMA) in Lafia, the state capital. The ongoing upgrade of facilities, including warehouses at NASDSMA, underscores the commitment to effectively manage and distribute drugs in line with global standards.

Expressing satisfaction with the quality of work and materials used in the project, Gwamna hailed it as the best in the North-Central Geo-Political Zone. He emphasized the crucial role of the agency in addressing the challenges of drug availability and affordability in public health facilities across the state.

Commending UNICEF for its substantial contribution to the project, Gwamna highlighted the organization’s dedication to enhancing healthcare in Nasarawa State. He lauded UNICEF for providing 85% of the total project funding, underscoring their commitment to the well-being of the state’s populace.

With this substantial investment in infrastructure and the ability to procure drugs directly from manufacturers, Gwamna affirmed that the era of substandard drug supply in healthcare facilities is over. Furthermore, he noted that drug prices in public facilities are now affordable and uniform across the state, thanks to the agency’s control.

The commissioner also extended the initiative to private hospitals willing to engage in business with the government, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare services.

Counterfeit drugs remain a significant concern in Nigeria, with recent seizures reported across the country. This collaboration between the Nasarawa government and UNICEF marks a pivotal step in safeguarding public health and ensuring access to genuine and affordable medications for all residents.
