NDLEA Cracks Nigerian–Mexican Meth Syndicate, Arrests Drug Baron, Three Mexicans And Six Others

According to Ireporter Online, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on transnational drug trafficking with the dismantling of a sophisticated Nigerian–Mexican methamphetamine production syndicate operating in Nigeria.

The operation, carried out by the Agency’s Special Operations Unit (SOU), led to the discovery and shutdown of an industrial-scale clandestine meth laboratory hidden deep within the Abidagba forest in the Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State. The facility, described as the largest ever uncovered in the country, was allegedly used for large-scale production of methamphetamine by a cartel involving Nigerian and Mexican collaborators.

The coordinated operation, which also extended to Lagos State, resulted in the arrest of the cartel’s alleged kingpin, identified as Anochili Innocent, alongside three Mexican nationals and six Nigerian accomplices. Authorities say the suspects were apprehended following months of intelligence-led surveillance and a simultaneous strike executed across multiple locations within 48 hours.

NDLEA officials revealed that the foreign nationals were brought into the country specifically as technical experts to oversee the production process, while local collaborators provided logistical and operational support. The agency also confirmed that a luxury residence linked to the drug baron in the Lekki area of Lagos was raided, leading to the recovery of international passports and communication devices belonging to the foreign suspects.

Further follow-up operations reportedly led to additional arrests connected to the syndicate and the discovery of stash locations used to store illicit substances and equipment.

Preliminary forensic analysis conducted by NDLEA specialists indicated that over 2,400 kilograms of chemical materials and finished methamphetamine were recovered from the laboratory. Authorities estimate the seized drugs to have a combined international street value running into hundreds of millions of dollars.

NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), described the operation as a significant blow to organised drug cartels, warning that Nigeria would not serve as a safe haven for drug manufacturing networks, regardless of how sophisticated their operations may be.

He added that the Agency would continue to intensify intelligence-led operations targeting both local and international drug syndicates exploiting rural and urban areas for illicit drug production.

The NDLEA urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, particularly unusual chemical-related operations in remote communities, noting that community cooperation remains critical in the fight against drug trafficking.
