NIA Chief Ahmed Rufai Abubakar Resigns After Six Years of Service
Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, the Director-General of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency (NIA), has officially stepped down from his role after more than six years of dedicated service. His resignation was tendered to President Bola Tinubu on Saturday, following a routine briefing on the agency’s activities.
Rufai, who had been at the helm of Nigeria’s external intelligence agency since January 10, 2018, cited personal and family reasons for his departure. Speaking to State House correspondents, he emphasized that his decision was not driven by any serious issues but rather personal matters that required his attention.
“There are quite a number of reasons one will do that, some personal family issues, but nothing very serious, actually, and the friendship will continue,” Rufai shared, underscoring that his relationship with the government remains strong.
During his discussion with President Tinubu, the President acknowledged and respected Rufai’s choice to step down, understanding the personal nature of his decision.
Rufai expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to lead the NIA, a position he was appointed to by former President Muhammadu Buhari. His tenure was marked by navigating complex challenges in international intelligence and diplomacy, leaving a significant impact on the agency.
Rufai’s resignation marks the first high-ranking official to exit under President Tinubu’s administration, signaling the end of an era for the NIA. The agency now looks forward to new leadership that will guide its future direction.
