Nigeria Backs Olufemi Elias for Prestigious ICJ Seat in UN Elections

The Federal Government has endorsed the candidacy of Olufemi Elias for a seat at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), as member states prepare for judicial elections scheduled for November 12 in New York during a joint meeting of the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly. The election will fill the vacancy left by Somali judge Abdulqawi Ahmed, who will step down on September 30.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, formally presented Elias in a recorded statement, describing him as one of the most respected authorities in international law, with a career marked by exceptional legal scholarship, decades of global service, and a strong commitment to justice, equity, and the rule of law. Tuggar said the nomination demonstrates Nigeria’s dedication to a rules-based international order where peace is preserved and all nations have an equal voice in shaping a secure future for humanity.

Elias currently serves as an ad hoc judge of the ICJ. His professional background includes distinguished judicial appointments, advanced academic qualifications, and extensive service within international institutions. Tuggar expressed confidence that his election would strengthen global justice and promote the peaceful settlement of disputes between nations.

Olufemi Elias follows in the footsteps of his father, Taslim Elias, who served on the ICJ bench from 1976 to 1991, including terms as vice-president and president of the court.
