The Nigerian football community has been struck by yet another tragedy following the death of former Super Eagles winger and league legend, Okwuchukwu ‘Allen’ Waobikeze.

Fondly called “Babaoo” by fans and colleagues, Waobikeze was widely admired for his electric pace, exceptional dribbling skills, and powerful left foot, which made him a crowd favorite during his playing days in the domestic league.

His passing comes shortly after the loss of former national team captain and goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, compounding the sorrow in Nigeria’s football circles.

The sad news was confirmed by Allen’s brother, Eli Waobikeze, who announced the development in an emotional Facebook post on Monday. “On behalf of the Waobikeze family, I would like to announce the peaceful passing to eternal glory of my brother Allen Okwuchukwu Waobikeze. He transitioned at about 7:34 pm CST,” the statement read.

Eli expressed gratitude to all who supported and prayed for his brother during his final moments. He noted that funeral details would be shared in due course, requesting continued prayers for the family.

Although Allen Waobikeze earned limited caps for the Super Eagles due to intense competition at the national level, he was a celebrated figure in Nigeria’s professional league, playing for top-tier clubs such as Sharks FC (Port Harcourt), BCC Lions (Gboko), and Iwuanyanwu Nationale, now known as Heartland FC.
