Nigerian Man Narrates How Female Beninise ‘Online Trader” Defrauded Him

A Nigerian man who identified himself as Prince Barnabas Shola described how he was duped by a young woman from Benin Republic who claimed to be an online cloth seller and lives in Lagos.

Speaking with SaharaReporters, Prince Shola, who lives in Lagos and works as a chef, said he met the woman identified as Aguessi Philomène on Facebook, where she claimed to sell clothes, footwear, wrist watches, and other items that she posts on her Facebook page.

“I thought she was a genuine person and that was why I decided to patronise her because of the fact that nowadays, people do online businesses which are genuine. So, on this fateful day, I chatted her up and we started communicating to the extent that she sent her WhatsApp number to me and we started chatting on WhatsApp as well.

“At a point, I started using another number to chat with her until I told her that I wanted to visit her shop to buy some clothes but for whatever reason I don’t know, she blocked me. I started using another number again to chat with her and we started talking again. That was when she told me that her phone was bad and she wanted to fix it but I never knew she knew what she was doing,” Shola said.

He stated that earlier this month, specifically on Saturday, December 10, the lady approached him and asked if he was ready to make a deposit for the samples she sent to him so that she could bring them to him.

“Normally, I do share her materials on my WhatsApp status and so when she sent them to me, I shared them on my WhatsApp status and someone indicated an interest in some of them and based on that, I selected about six items, after which the person sent N20,000 to me to send to her.

“I called her and showed her the ones my friend said he liked and I asked her if she had them and she said yes, that everything was available. We discussed the price and she said I had to make a deposit and I asked how much, to which she said I should deposit N20,000 but I refused and told her I would deposit N15,000.

“I repeatedly asked her the location of her shop in Eleko which is towards Epe, because she kept mentioning Eleko. She told me that once I got to Eleko, I should ask for the Amen Estate. She said that her madam’s name is Akinwade Bukola with the account number: 4130097920, Ecobank.

“I then asked her to send her account number to me, which she did and said that before 10 am on the following day, Sunday, I would receive my items. But by 10 am on Sunday, I did not hear from her and I called her but there was no answer. I waited until 12 pm and called her again but there was still no answer till 1 pm when I called her again and immediately she heard my voice, she ended the call and blocked me.”

Shola said when it became obvious that Philomène had scammed him, he started posting her picture on Facebook, describing her as a scammer. He said other people came out to testify that she did the same thing to them. Among those who opened up on their experience with the lady, Shola said some of them said she collected N40,000 from them while some said she collected N50,000; N20,000 and N15,000.

“I then arranged with one of my brothers to chat with her and tell her that he wanted to visit her shop to collect the items. She also told my brother to come to the same Eleko and that once he got to Eleko, he should call her. I then arranged with one policeman from one police station around Eleko but when they got there and called her, she kept telling them that she was coming until evening and they gave up. After that, she blocked my brother’s number and the numbers they used to call her and that was how everything ended.

“Meanwhile, all her phone numbers are still available and her Facebook page is still working. Also, the account number of Madam Bukola, whom she claimed to be her madam, is what she uses for all her transactions.”
