Nigerian Man Shares 2-Page-Long Schengen Visa Rejection Letter

A Schengen Visa rejection letter, spanning two pages, was shared on Twitter by a user with the handle @Aprilbox. Other Twitter users, who had also faced unpleasant experiences with Schengen visa applications, called the letter “shocking” and “horrible.”

The letter was reportedly received by an acquaintance of the person who shared it, and the applicant already holds a visa granted by the United States.

The Schengen Visa application was submitted at the Swedish visa application center in Nigeria for a 14-day tourism trip. The rejection letter cited reasons for the visa denial, including the security and economic crisis in Nigeria, which raised doubts about the applicant’s true intentions behind the visa application.

The Embassy expressed concerns that Nigerian citizens might not leave the Schengen Zone before the visa expires, and, therefore, the applicant must be well-established in their home country to be considered for the visa.

The Embassy argued that the applicant claimed to own a company and provided certificates as evidence, but stronger evidence was required to prove the applicant’s access to assets or a fixed monthly income from the business.

The bank statements provided by the applicant were deemed insufficient to show their financial stability over a longer period. Lack of personal ownership of property or other financial ties to the home country were also cited.

Another reason for the visa rejection was the existence of a significant market of forged documents by private individuals in Nigeria, which raised doubts about the authenticity of the documents submitted by the applicant.

The fact that the applicant had never been to the Schengen Zone before also contributed to the visa rejection, as the Embassy found the stated purpose of the trip questionable.

The rejection letter received criticism on Twitter for containing stereotypes and not being an acceptable way to draft such a letter. Some Twitter users placed blame on the applicant for not submitting stronger evidence of ties to their home country and financial proof.

It was also highlighted that Nigeria has one of the highest Schengen visa rejection rates, with 45.6% of visa applications filed in 2022 being rejected. The country ranks 22nd as the largest source of Schengen visa applicants in the world.
