Late Tuesday night in the Omisanjana area of Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, a community was shaken by a tragic incident resulting in the loss of two young lives. What began as a vehicular accident spiraled into a chaotic situation, culminating in an accidental discharge from a police officer’s firearm.
The sequence of events unfolded around 10:30 p.m., triggered initially by a vehicular accident that stirred unrest among local youths. Reports suggest that following the accident, enraged youths attempted to confront the driver and even set the vehicle ablaze. The escalating tension prompted the intervention of the police to restore order and prevent further chaos.
However, amidst efforts to diffuse the situation, a tragic mishap occurred. An officer accidentally discharged his firearm, fatally striking two young men who were among the onlookers. Despite swift efforts to rush them to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, they tragically succumbed to their injuries en route.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Ekiti State Command, DSP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident, expressing profound regret over the tragic turn of events. Commissioner of Police, Akinwale Adeniran, wasted no time in ordering a thorough and discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement addressing the incident, Abutu emphasized the commitment of the police force to ensuring public safety and underscored the gravity with which this incident is being treated. The officer responsible for the accidental discharge has been disarmed, arrested, and detained pending further investigation. Commissioner Adeniran extended sincere condolences to the families of the deceased, assuring them that justice will be diligently pursued.
As the community grapples with the shock and grief brought about by this unfortunate incident, authorities remain resolute in their pursuit of transparency and accountability. The loss of these young lives serves as a stark reminder of the need for utmost caution and responsibility in handling firearms, even in the most volatile of situations.
