Nigeria’s CSOs Raise Alarm Over NNPCL’s Petrol Import Move, Call It A Threat To Economic Stability

Organisations (NICOCSO), the group condemned the move as an intentional effort to weaken Nigeria’s local refining capabilities, worsen the economy, and increase the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, NICOCSO officials expressed concerns that this decision would exacerbate Nigeria’s economic challenges. They argued that importing such a large volume of fuel would place undue strain on the country’s foreign exchange reserves and further devalue the Naira.

Tabuko Kennedy, the group’s spokesperson, emphasized that the importation would drive up inflation, making daily essentials unaffordable for Nigerians. He also noted that the continued reliance on imported fuel undermines efforts to achieve energy independence and hampers investment in local refining infrastructure.

The group also criticized the reportedly substandard quality of the imported PMS, which has been damaging vehicles and increasing maintenance costs for many Nigerians. NICOCSO vowed to organize nationwide protests in Abuja and other states unless the government meets certain demands, including improved transparency, accountability, and policies that support the development of local industries.

Kennedy concluded, “The decision to import over 1.6 billion litres of PMS is not just a policy mistake; it is a deliberate move to undermine Nigeria’s refining potential and weaken our economy. We cannot allow decisions that harm our future to go unchallenged.”
