NLC Urged To Pursue-Dialogue For Acceptable Minimum-Wage: Former CAN Chairman Advocates For Alternative-Solutions
Rev. John Joseph Hayab, former Kaduna State chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Country Director of Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to engage in meaningful dialogue with the Federal Government to reach a consensus on a fair minimum wage for the country’s workforce.
In light of the prevailing economic challenges faced by Nigerians, Hayab emphasized the importance of both parties finding common ground on the minimum wage issue. He cautioned against the overuse of strikes as a bargaining tool, likening it to a husband threatening divorce at the slightest provocation, which undermines credibility.
Expressing concern over the government’s appeal to the labour union to consider a strike, Hayab urged swift action towards alternative solutions to prevent disruption to the nation’s productivity. He urged flexibility from both sides, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that benefits all Nigerians and fosters national development.
Hayab stressed the urgency of finding practical solutions to alleviate economic hardship and called for realism in the discussions between labour and government. He appealed for concerted efforts to avert the impending strike and urged both parties to prioritize the nation’s welfare.
In the face of economic challenges, Hayab’s call for dialogue and alternative solutions resonates as a pragmatic approach towards resolving the minimum wage impasse for the betterment of Nigeria and its citizens.
