grassroots approach and leadership in the House Committee on Digital, Information Technology, and Cybersecurity, Olajide shared his thoughts on Nigeria’s National Assembly, the issue of cybercrime, and the role of opposition in the legislative process.
Reflecting on his journey, Olajide highlighted the importance of connecting with people at the grassroots level and understanding their struggles. His political experience, he said, has shaped his approach to governance, emphasizing the need for humility and communication with local leaders across various political factions.
On the perception of the National Assembly as a passive body, Olajide acknowledged the influence of the executive but stressed that the current assembly, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass, is far from a rubber stamp. Olajide pointed to the thoughtful debate surrounding significant bills, such as the Tax Reform Bill, which was carefully reviewed before decisions were made.
Olajide also voiced concern over the rise of cybercrime, recognizing the challenges posed by economic hardship but advocating for a balanced approach—focused on strengthening cybersecurity and re-educating young people engaged in these crimes, rather than solely punishing them.
In terms of legislative contributions, Olajide proudly cited key initiatives, including his sponsorship of the Digital Economy Bill and efforts to upgrade the Federal College of Agriculture in Ibadan to university status. He also spoke on his involvement in the push for the creation of Ibadan State and his support for over 25 motions and bills aimed at improving governance and society.
When discussing the role of the opposition in the National Assembly, Olajide emphasized that constructive criticism is more effective than destructive opposition. He expressed confidence that the opposition, though sometimes subdued, will become more vocal as they assess the executive’s performance in the coming years.
In his constituency, Olajide highlighted several developmental projects, from building schools and ICT centers to improving healthcare infrastructure. His dedication to enhancing the lives of his constituents remains a priority, with ongoing efforts to improve religious and cultural facilities as well.
