NUC Unveils 13 New Degree Programmes To Revolutionize Nigerian Universities

According to Ireporter Online, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has given the green light for the introduction of 13 new degree programmes across Nigerian universities, further expanding academic options for prospective students nationwide.

In a circular issued to all vice-chancellors, the Commission explained that the newly approved courses have been incorporated into the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) as part of efforts to enhance academic relevance and align higher education in Nigeria with global best practices.

The circular, signed by the NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, revealed that the newly approved programmes include Artificial Intelligence, Classical Christian Education, Human Kinetics (with specialization in Sports Management), Geomatics Engineering, Community Health Science, Intelligence and Security Studies, Islamic Economics and Finance, Parasitology and Entomology, Telecommunication Science, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Cooperative Economics and Management, Nuclear Science, and Nuclear Engineering.

The Commission noted that experts from various Nigerian universities participated in formulating 70 percent of the national component of these programmes in March 2025. It added that individual universities would develop the remaining 30 percent of the curriculum in line with the CCMAS framework.

Universities intending to introduce any of the new courses are advised to commence implementation in the 2025/2026 academic session following a successful resource assessment visit. Vice-chancellors were further instructed to distribute the approved CCMAS documents to relevant faculties, departments, and academic planning units to ensure smooth adoption.
