Okpebholo Fires Back At Peter Obi: “You Can’t Even Deliver Your State In 2027

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has dismissed the political influence of former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that the electoral dynamics that played out in 2023 would not be replicated.

According to Ireporter Online, the governor made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television, where he expressed confidence in his administration’s popularity and governance record. He questioned Obi’s ability to secure victory even in his home state, arguing that the current political climate had shifted significantly due to what he described as effective leadership in Edo State.

Okpebholo also addressed reactions trailing his earlier comments following Obi’s visit to the state, which reportedly faced challenges. He clarified that his intention was to ensure the opposition figure’s safety, noting that the prevailing security situation required proper coordination with state authorities. The governor maintained that as a high-profile personality, Obi needed adequate protection, and prior notice would enable the government to work with security agencies to guarantee his safety.

Speaking on national politics, Okpebholo strongly defended President Bola Tinubu, describing him as currently the most widely accepted political figure in the country. He attributed the wave of defections by governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress to the administration’s policies and performance, noting that such movements were voluntary and reflective of confidence in the government.

The governor further argued that the Tinubu administration had demonstrated courage by implementing difficult reforms that previous governments avoided, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, which he said was already yielding benefits for the country.

Reacting to criticisms from opposition figures over economic challenges and insecurity, Okpebholo dismissed such concerns, suggesting that critics were reluctant to acknowledge progress because they were not in power.
