on Friday, led by Sampson Ekong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals Development, Oshiomhole, who also oversees the Senate Committee on Interior, made these allegations known.

As a former Governor of Edo State, Oshiomhole emphasized that these retired generals are well-known figures in Nigerian society. He referenced a letter he had previously sent to former President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighting the serious implications of illegal mining.

Oshiomhole stated, “The illegal mining happening nationwide is orchestrated by retired generals, and we are fully aware of who they are. It’s common knowledge across Africa. I wrote to former President Muhammadu Buhari regarding this issue during his administration.

“I became aware of the problem when a team I sent out reported challenges in conducting primary elections in Zamfara due to the presence of illegal miners.”

Oshiomhole also called for the establishment of joint task forces, incorporating the Army, Police, and Air Force, to tackle illegal mining and oil theft, advocating for more robust enforcement measures.

“To effectively combat this issue, we must deploy the Army to eliminate anyone involved in the illegal extraction of oil. We need to form Joint Task Forces with the Army, Police, and Air Force to take them on,” he emphasized.

He warned that Nigeria’s economic diversification efforts will be futile unless President Bola Tinubu’s administration takes decisive action against illegal mining operations.

The committee members supported Oshiomhole’s assertions and urged the nation’s security agencies to ramp up their efforts to confront the issue.
