Nigerian Army personnel being killed by unknown gunmen at a checkpoint in Umuahia.
In response to the killings, the Abia State government claimed that certain politicians were instigating the violence to destabilize Governor Otti’s administration. The government stated that the plot to undermine the state began in May 2024.
Eric Ikwuagwu, the PDP’s Publicity Secretary in Abia, criticized the Labour Party government for its failure to address security issues in the state. In a statement issued on Monday, Ikwuagwu called on the government to collaborate with security agencies and provide concrete evidence to help arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attacks, instead of fostering division.
“Politicizing the safety of Abians is not only ineffective but also dangerous,” Ikwuagwu warned. He further emphasized that addressing insecurity requires comprehensive strategies, not just declarations.
The PDP also reminded the current administration of its responsibility to tackle insecurity through coordinated efforts and warned against disregarding the opposition’s role in offering constructive criticism.
