Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25, 2023 election, has denied allegations suggesting that he financially supported the burial of journalist Rufai Oseni’s father.

Obi addressed these speculations, emphasizing the need to clarify his stance due to the mischievous attempts by certain individuals to link him to the burial for personal gain.

In a statement issued by his Media Office on Monday, Obi expressed his dissatisfaction with these attempts at sponsored blackmail.

He condemned such efforts by individuals seeking to tarnish his well-established reputation and urged them to channel their energy towards contributing to a better Nigeria.

Obi stated, “I typically refrain from engaging in name-calling, mudslinging, and personal attacks throughout my political journey. I also avoid responding publicly to baseless and malicious blackmail, which is hurled at me in an irresponsible manner.”

The former governor of Anambra state highlighted that he chooses to address the issue when a third party is involved. He explained that he is often invited to various social events, such as birthdays and funerals, and he attends with the intention of supporting those grieving, adhering to Igbo tradition. Obi clarified that he does not provide financial incentives to journalists or media personnel to speak or write favorably about him.

Obi affirmed that his focus remains on addressing societal challenges, uplifting people from poverty, and finding solutions to the nation’s problems. He called for unity in rescuing Nigeria from its current predicaments, emphasizing the importance of focusing on eradicating poverty and creating opportunities for the unemployed youth.

He concluded, “Our attention should be dedicated to addressing the pressing challenges facing our nation. Millions of Nigerians are struggling with poverty, unemployment, and uncertainty about their next meal. It’s crucial that we work together to find solutions to these issues for the progress of our nation, and that’s where my commitment lies.”
