Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reportedly visited former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), amid ongoing legal proceedings involving allegations of terrorism financing. According to reports, Malami is currently facing two separate cases, including accusations of terrorism financing and illegal firearms possession, as well as an ₦8.7 billion fraud and money laundering case.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) stated on social media that Obi’s visit was intended to show support for Malami during his trials. The post read, “HE Peter Obi visits Abubakar Malami SAN to express support over his recent experiences with the EFCC, DSS and subsequent court proceedings by the Federal High Court FCT.”

Details regarding the location and timing of the meeting have not been disclosed. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja had recently granted bail to Malami, his son Abdulaziz Malami, and his wife Asabe Bashir, setting the sum at ₦200 million each with two sureties in like sum. As part of the bail conditions, one surety must provide title deeds for properties in Maitama or Asokoro, and the defendants are required to deposit their international passports with the court. They remain in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service pending fulfillment of these conditions.
