Peter Obi Plays Safe: Why He Won’t Risk Going Back to PDP

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate and leading opposition figure, is unlikely to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), according to remarks attributed to Bolaji Abdullahi, interim national publicity secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

During a recent appearance on a national television programme monitored by iReporter Online, Abdullahi affirmed that Obi remains an active member of the coalition. He emphasized that returning to the PDP would be a politically risky move, citing the ruling All Progressives Congress’ (APC) continued influence over the opposition party.

“Peter is in the coalition, regardless of what anyone is saying,” Abdullahi said, asserting that “everyone knows that the jugular of the PDP is still in the hands of the ruling party.” According to him, Peter Obi is well aware of the potential consequences and would not endanger his political standing by rejoining the PDP.

Abdullahi further stated that while the emergence of the ADC has stirred activity within the PDP ranks, the influence of the APC remains deeply entrenched. He suggested that the coalition movement represented by the ADC is gaining traction and has become a credible alternative in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

Responding to questions regarding the party’s 2027 presidential flagbearer, Abdullahi clarified that no such discussions are currently underway. “Our party is one month old. We are not having any conversation about who will be the flagbearer at the moment. We are focused on developing the party, building structures, and establishing systems that demonstrate our commitment to democracy,” he noted.

He assured that when the time comes, the party’s presidential candidate will be selected through a transparent and inclusive democratic process.

As reported by iReporter Online, the ADC appears more concerned with institutional development at this stage, rather than immediate electoral contests. The party leadership remains focused on laying a solid foundation as Nigeria’s political climate heads toward the 2027 general elections.
