Peter Obi Proposes Single-Term Presidency To Opposition Bloc – Obidient Leader
The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, has formally presented a proposal to serve only a single four-year term if chosen by the emerging opposition coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Naija News reports that Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, confirmed this during an event on Tuesday in Pantami, Gombe State, where Obi was honoured with the traditional title of ‘Sarki Maskan’ (War Hero) by the District Head of Pantami, Mai Martaba Abdullahi, in recognition of his philanthropic efforts in the community.
Obi’s former media aide was also conferred with the title ‘Dan Maje Babba Pantanmi’ at the ceremony.
Speaking on the sidelines to Punch, Tanko revealed that Obi’s one-term proposal has already been tabled before key opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Senate President David Mark.
“We have presented it to the coalition. It’s now left for them to decide. But we believe it is a plan that can work. It’s a pronouncement rooted in integrity, and Obi embodies that. Nigeria desperately needs leaders with integrity,” Tanko said.
Tanko further explained that Obi believes four years is more than enough to jump-start Nigeria’s transformation and revive the struggling economy.
“Even though the constitution doesn’t specify a single term, Obi is personally committing to serve just one tenure if elected. He is convinced four years is sufficient to execute his mission.”
According to Tanko, Obi’s strategy includes tackling Nigeria’s electricity crisis, which he argued would drastically change the country’s economic landscape by boosting local production and reducing dependence on imports.
“Obi has promised that under his leadership, Nigeria will return to being an exporting nation. Planes will stop leaving our airports empty,” Tanko added.
Why Obi Accepted Pantami Chieftaincy Title
Tanko also shed light on why Obi accepted the ‘Sarki Maskan’ title after years of turning down similar honours, noting that this particular recognition carried unique weight because it came from a northern Muslim community.
“Obi doesn’t chase titles, but this is different. It shows a northern community recognizing an Igbo man for his generosity. It speaks volumes about his growing national appeal, especially in the North where he had less support in 2023,” Tanko said.
He pointed to Obi’s grassroots interventions in northern Nigeria, such as funding boreholes and Almajiri schools, which have earned him goodwill across communities once seen as politically distant.
“In Pantami today, they don’t just have water for people, even animals drink from Peter Obi’s boreholes. Locals now say, ‘Get me water from Peter Obi’s borehole.’ That shows real impact.”
Tanko concluded by describing Obi’s growing acceptance in the North as a sign of shifting political tides ahead of 2027, suggesting Nigerians are rallying around competence rather than ethnic or religious lines.
