Peter Obi Risks Political Backlash Over Labour Party Crisis, Abure Loyalists Claim

Chieftains loyal to Labour Party National Chairman Julius Abure have accused 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi of contributing to the internal crises plaguing the party. They allege Obi’s actions are destabilizing the party and warn that such moves could lead to his downfall ahead of the 2027 general elections…READ MORE…

This follows Abure’s recent statement expressing optimism about reconciling party factions after the Court of Appeal recognized him as the legitimate chairman of the Labour Party.

In an interview with Punch, Blessing Elaigwu, convener of the Alliance for All Labour Party Professionals and Stakeholders, criticized Obi for allegedly neglecting party leadership and instigating needless litigations. Elaigwu warned that Obi’s speculated plans to move to another political party while weakening the Labour Party would harm his political credibility.

“You will recall that Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti convened an illegal stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia last year to oust the Abure-led executive and appoint their cronies. After losing in court, if Obi thinks he can destroy the party before leaving, he’s only sabotaging himself,” Elaigwu stated.

Cornel Max-Nduaguibe, a member of the Obidient Movement, urged Obi to reconsider his position and leverage his influence to resolve internal conflicts. He emphasized the need for unity, transparency, and accountability within the party to maintain the momentum from the 2023 elections.

In response, Peter Obi’s media aide, Umar Ibrahim, dismissed the allegations, saying, “His Excellency Peter Obi is not interested in endless drama or name-calling. We won’t engage in Julius Abure’s shenanigans.”

Observers now wait to see how the Labour Party addresses these internal divisions as it prepares for future elections.
