Plateau Governor Signs N30bn Contract To Address Water Scarcity

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has signed a N30 billion contract aimed at tackling the state’s ongoing water supply challenges.

The project will focus on improving water access and distribution, particularly in the southern region of Plateau, which consists of six local government areas.

Governor Mutfwang, who attended the contract signing ceremony on Friday, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to finding a long-term solution to the state’s water issues. At the event, Mutfwang highlighted the importance of the project, noting that it represents a major step in addressing the water shortage in the southern senatorial district within the next 30 months.

“This agreement is a significant milestone in our efforts to resolve Plateau’s water crisis. When we took office, the water sector was in a dire state, and the Yakubu Gowon Dam had been largely neglected, leading to inconsistent water supply in the Jos-Bukuru area,” the governor stated.

Mutfwang assured the public that his administration is working diligently to resolve the issue, with a focus on the Yakubu Gowon Dam and other critical water sources within the metropolitan area. He expressed confidence that progress would be made within the next six months to address these challenges.

The governor emphasized that the water crisis in the southern zone of Plateau is a top priority for his government. He further explained that the project is funded through a loan secured under the World Bank framework, alongside other northern states. The project aims to combat desertification, restore the environment, and ensure sustainable water supply.

The project scope includes desilting Dams One and Two in Langtang North, constructing hedgerows to prevent future siltation, reinforcing embankments, and planting trees and grass to combat erosion, reduce land degradation, and enhance environmental sustainability. These efforts are expected to provide a stable water supply for the affected communities.

Garba Gonkol, the Project Coordinator for ACReSAL, praised Mutfwang for prioritizing impactful initiatives, acknowledging that Plateau has never seen such a high level of commitment to solving water challenges.

Akin Fagbohun, the Project Engineer and Contractor, also provided an overview of the project and assured the public that the contract would be completed within the agreed 30-month timeline.
