Police Commission Directs Four DIGs To Proceed On Compulsory Retirement, Gives Reason

The Police Service Commission PSC

The Police Service Commission has issued an order for the compulsory retirement of four Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs).

The affected DIGs are Dan-Mallam Mohammed, Moses Ambakina Jitiboh, Hafiz Mohammed Inuwa, and Adeleke Adeyinka Bode.

In a statement released on Monday by its spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, the commission explained that the decision was made in accordance with its statutory authority as outlined in the Third Schedule, Part 1 M, para A&B of the 1999 Constitution, reinforced by Section 6 of the Commissions (Establishment) Act 2001.

Upon the appointment of the acting Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, on June 19, 2023, the commission had expected the senior DIGs to voluntarily apply for retirement or choose to leave the police force, in line with established tradition and discipline.

However, since no such applications were received, the commission decided to enforce compulsory retirement as a means to maintain discipline and prevent the reversal of status that undermines the authority of the Inspector General.

The former DIGs have been directed to proceed on compulsory retirement effective from Friday, August 25, 2023. The commission expressed its gratitude for their substantial contributions to peace and security in the country and wished them success in their retirement.

Additionally, the police commission has granted approval for the promotion of four Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) to the rank of DIGs. These newly appointed DIGs, pending the board’s ratification, will replace the retired DIGs.

The newly appointed DIGs are Ibrahim Sani Ka’oje, Daniel Sokari-Pedro, Ayuba Ekpeji, and Usman Nagogo. The commission noted that the new appointments maintain a regional balance in alignment with the geopolitical regions of the retired DIGs.
