Relations Officer, citizens are urged to familiarize themselves with the relevant laws.
Under Section 197 of the Criminal Code Act, anyone who obstructs or resists a public officer while executing their lawful duties is guilty of a misdemeanour, with penalties including up to two years in prison.
Similarly, the Police Act 2020 stipulates strict penalties for such offences. Section 42 mandates that citizens assist judges, magistrates, and police officers in lawful arrests or preventing the escape of suspects. Failure to comply results in a potential fine or imprisonment.
Section 98 of the Police Act further specifies that anyone assaulting, obstructing, or resisting a police officer is subject to a fine of N500,000, imprisonment for six months, or both.
Moreover, under Section 99, individuals who refuse to assist police officers during threats or resistance can be fined N100,000, imprisoned for three months, or both.
The statement reads, “Know the Law and Abide by It.”
These regulations underscore the importance of collaboration and respect for law enforcement, ensuring that the rule of law is upheld effectively.
