Political Peace In Jeopardy: Hafizu Kawu Calls Out Social Media’s Destructive Role
Hafizu Kawu, a former member of the House of Representatives, has expressed concern over the damaging impact of social media misuse in political discourse. He warned that the improper use of social media is endangering the peaceful coexistence between politicians and their supporters.
Kawu shared these concerns during a Two-Day Media Summit he organized in partnership with the Kano State Chapter of the Council of Ulama.
“Politicians often misuse social media to insult one another, spread hate speech, undermine political opponents, and occasionally incite violence, all of which contradict our religious values,” Kawu stated.
He further noted that initiatives like the summit can help cleanse the political environment and encourage more constructive political conversations.
The summit’s goal, according to Kawu, is to reshape societal attitudes and cultivate mutual respect among politicians and their supporters.
He also called on media organizations to join the effort to purify the social media space.
“We all share the responsibility to make communication more respectful, healthier, and accountable,” Kawu emphasized.
Kawu acknowledged the challenges of social media misuse but stressed its importance in today’s communication landscape.
“Social media is the future. It spreads like wildfire, touching every corner of society. It’s here to stay, and we must make the most of it,” he said.
The summit brought together Islamic scholars, legal experts, communication professionals, and politicians from various parties to address the growing issue of social media abuse in politics.
