Political Showdown In Edo As PDP Demands Immediate Reversal Of LGA Chairmen Suspension
The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the recent suspension of the chairmen from the state’s 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) by the Edo State House of Assembly, which allegedly acted under the directive of Governor Monday…Political Showdown In Edo As PDP Demands Immediate Reversal Of LGA Chairmen Suspension
Okpebholo.
Earlier, ireporteronline reported that the House suspended the LGA executives during a plenary session on Tuesday.
In a statement released by Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, Chairman of Edo PDP, the party denounced the suspension as unconstitutional, labeling it null and void.
The PDP argued that the suspension violated the Nigerian Constitution and disregarded a recent ruling by Edo State’s Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, as well as a Supreme Court verdict that affirmed the independence and autonomy of local governments.
“How can the Governor instruct the State Assembly to suspend democratically elected chairmen for insubordination, when these officials are meant to operate autonomously, as guaranteed by the Constitution?” Dr. Aziegbemi questioned.
He emphasized that local government chairmen are not subordinates of the Governor, the State Assembly, or any other government body.
The PDP further criticized the lack of due process in the suspension, stating that the affected chairmen and their deputies were not given an opportunity to defend themselves. The party described the charges against the officials as baseless, accusing the action of undermining justice, fairness, and the rule of law.
The statement concluded, “The Constitution is supreme, and any effort to undermine it or ignore judicial rulings is not only illegal but an attack on democracy and the rule of law.”
The PDP called for the immediate reversal of the suspension, urging the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and other lawmakers to respect the rule of law and constitutional limits. They also instructed the suspended chairmen and their deputies to resume their duties immediately.
Lastly, the PDP appealed to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to intervene, as the actions of the Edo Governor were deemed to be a violation of constitutional rights and a potential threat to security.
