Power Minister Condemns Nigerian Air Force Attack On Ikeja DisCo

Expressing his dismay, Adelabu emphasized that under Nigeria’s democratic system, there are established channels for resolving disputes, making it unnecessary to resort to violent actions.

“The attack on Ikeja Electric, a key player in the country’s power distribution network, by the Nigerian Air Force is highly regrettable and completely unacceptable. This incident highlights the critical need for dialogue, restraint, and adherence to democratic processes in addressing conflicts,” he stated.

The Minister underscored the vital role of the power sector in national development, noting that any assault on electricity infrastructure directly impacts millions of Nigerians. He pointed out that Ikeja Electric’s facilities supply electricity to essential services, including hospitals, schools, industries, and even military installations.

“This unfortunate event has not only disrupted electricity distribution but has also set back our collective efforts to achieve stable and uninterrupted power supply,” he added.

Adelabu stressed that regardless of the circumstances, no grievance justifies the destruction of public infrastructure, as such actions only worsen existing challenges. He urged all parties involved to embrace peaceful, lawful avenues for dispute resolution, reminding them of Nigeria’s well-established judicial and regulatory institutions designed to mediate conflicts.

“Our democracy provides mechanisms to address disputes without resorting to violence. We must leverage these channels to ensure that justice is served and to prevent future occurrences of such incidents,” he advised.

The Minister also called on the Nigerian Air Force to uphold professionalism and conduct its operations with respect for civilians and public property. While acknowledging the military’s essential role in national security, he emphasized the need for its actions to align with democratic principles and the rule of law.

Commending the resilience of Ikeja Electric’s staff and management in the wake of the attack, Adelabu reassured them of the government’s support in restoring normal operations as quickly as possible.
