Proposed N8,000 Subsidy Palliative Is A Lot To Many Families – Gov. Sule

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has expressed his disagreement with those who believe that the proposed N8,000 palliative from the Federal Government would not sufficiently alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on impoverished Nigerians.

During his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, the governor maintained that N8,000 is a substantial sum for many underprivileged families in the country who do not earn such an amount in a month.

He pointed out that in the past, they were distributing only N5,000, and there were numerous people who relied on that amount every month.

Some communities even made additional contributions and achieved significant improvements within their localities.

While N8,000 may not appear substantial to some individuals, Governor Sule emphasized that it means a lot to many impoverished families who never see such an amount regularly.

He suggested identifying these families to ensure the palliative reaches the intended recipients.

In a meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima and attended by the governors of all 36 states of the Federation, the National Executive Council (NEC) agreed on palliative measures for Nigerians.

The decision was made that cash transfers would be executed through state social registers, taking into account the unique characteristics of each state.

Governor Sule acknowledged issues with the national social register, highlighting instances of ineligible individuals receiving funds from the government.

He clarified that the governors are not calling for the complete abandonment of the national social register but rather advocating for necessary amendments to address these issues.

The proposal from the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government is to transfer N8,000 to 12 million impoverished households in Nigeria for a period of six months to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

The President believes that this money transfer will have a positive effect on about 60 million people. The funds are intended to be transferred digitally to ensure transparency and credibility in the process.
