Senate Gears Up To Revive Nigeria’s Agricultural Colleges

According to reports, the Nigerian Senate has intensified efforts to transform the country’s agricultural colleges and research institutions, reaching out to key international partners to drive reforms, technology transfer, and fresh investments in the sector.

The initiative, led by the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, involves strategic engagements with countries including Malaysia, the European Union, Brazil, China, Germany, India, and the United Kingdom. The plan aims to revitalise agricultural education and research across Nigeria.

Senator Sharafadeen Alli, chairman of the committee, announced the engagements during high-level visits to diplomatic missions in Abuja, emphasizing the National Assembly’s commitment to harnessing global expertise to enhance productivity, build capacity, and generate employment opportunities.

The diplomatic outreach serves as preparation for the maiden National Legislative Summit and Expo on Agricultural Colleges and Research Institutions, scheduled to hold from May 11 to 13 at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan, Oyo State. The summit is expected to mobilize international support, strengthen institutional frameworks, and highlight innovations that can accelerate Nigeria’s agricultural transformation.

Alli explained that strategic alliances with leading agricultural nations are intended to promote research collaboration, mechanisation, and the adoption of modern farming technologies. At the Malaysian High Commission, he highlighted Malaysia’s expertise in palm oil production and agro-industrial development, noting its potential benefits for Nigeria.

During discussions with the European Union Delegation, Alli emphasized collaboration on oil palm research and tackling challenges related to climate change, soil degradation, and food security. At the Brazilian Embassy, he praised Brazil’s productive agricultural system and stressed Nigeria could replicate its success through mechanisation, irrigation, and yield improvement.

Engagements with China and Germany focused on agricultural engineering, precision farming, and research-driven innovation, while discussions at the Indian High Commission centered on agro-technology, research exchange, and capacity building in smallholder farming. Talks with the British High Commission and Paraguayan representatives explored avenues to strengthen bilateral ties in agricultural education, research funding, and institutional reforms.

Alli reaffirmed agriculture’s central role in Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda, highlighting its potential for job creation, poverty reduction, and rural development. He assured that the National Assembly remains committed to enacting legislation to deepen partnerships, promote innovation, and drive sustainable reforms across the sector. He also called on diplomatic missions to actively participate in the upcoming summit, expressing confidence that it would shape policy direction and provide a roadmap for revitalising Nigeria’s agricultural institutions.
