Serena Williams Sh*cks Tennis World With Comeback After 4 Years
Serena Williams is poised to make a highly anticipated return to professional tennis nearly four years after stepping away from the sport, following her acceptance of a wildcard entry into the women’s doubles competition at the upcoming Queen’s Club Championships in London.
Reports indicate that the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion will compete in the WTA 500 event scheduled to begin on June 8. Although tournament organisers have yet to officially announce her doubles partner, widespread reports suggest she is expected to team up with rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko.
Williams, who retired from professional tennis in 2022 after one of the most successful careers in the history of the sport, had fuelled speculation about a possible comeback in recent months. Her inclusion in the sport’s anti-doping testing programme last year, followed by her appearance on a list of reinstated players published by the International Tennis Integrity Agency earlier this year, intensified discussions about a return.
The American tennis icon appeared to confirm the development on Sunday through a social media post showing her walking onto a tennis court. Accompanying the video were captions suggesting that news of her return had already begun circulating widely.
Speaking about her decision to return, Williams described Queen’s Club as the ideal venue to begin a new chapter in her career. She noted that grass courts had provided some of the most memorable moments of her professional journey and expressed excitement about competing once again on one of tennis’ most prestigious stages.
Her participation at Queen’s Club will mark her first competitive appearance since the 2022 US Open, ending a break of nearly 196 weeks from professional competition. The move has also sparked speculation about a potential appearance at Wimbledon, which begins just weeks after the Queen’s tournament. A wildcard invitation would be required for Williams to feature at the All England Club, where she has previously won seven singles and seven doubles titles.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in tennis history, Williams spent 319 weeks as world number one and captured 73 WTA singles titles during her illustrious career. In addition to her singles success, she secured 14 Grand Slam doubles titles alongside her sister, Venus Williams, and won three Olympic doubles gold medals. She also claimed an individual Olympic gold medal at the London 2012 Games.
Since retiring, Williams has focused on family life and business ventures. She welcomed her second daughter in 2023 and has frequently shared updates about her fitness journey, including significant weight loss and preparations for endurance events such as a half-marathon.
Her return to competitive action is expected to generate significant excitement across the tennis world as fans eagerly await the next chapter in the career of one of the sport’s most celebrated champions.
