Naija News reports that Yusuf is currently being held at Kirikiri Prison in Lagos, with no trial for over three months. According to online reports, he was on his way back from work when some people in his community accused him of theft and street fighting and handed him over to the police. However, eyewitnesses and supporters claim the accusations are false.

In a statement shared on (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Obi said he learned about Yusuf’s situation shortly after giving a speech at a Commonwealth event in London. He expressed concern that the boy had appeared in court for the first time in March but still remained in custody without a proper trial.

“I’ve asked Barrister Inibehe Effiong to take up the case. Thankfully, he has already started working on getting Yusuf released,” Obi said.

Obi also used the opportunity to call on the police and government officials to act within the law and stop targeting ordinary citizens, especially the youth.

“Our young people need support and love, not persecution,” he said. “They are the future of Nigeria, and we must help them develop their potential to build the better country we all dream of.”
