Chief of Field Office Kano, Rahama Rihood Mohammed Farah, the crisis is far more widespread and severe than previously thought.
“10.2 Million Children Out of School: 16% of Them from Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina States”
Farah disclosed that Nigeria has a staggering 10.2 million out-of-school children, with a shocking 16% of them hailing from Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina states. These three states are among the worst-affected by the crisis, with Kano state having over 989,000 children out of school, followed by Jigawa with 337,861, and Katsina with 536,112.
“Only 1 in 4 Children Can Read and Understand Simple Sentences”
In a disturbing revelation, UNICEF revealed that only 1 out of 4 children in Nigeria, aged 7-14, possess the basic literacy skills to read and understand simple sentences. This is a stark testament to the poor quality of education in the region.
“Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina States Lead the Pack in Poor Education Standards”
The UNICEF report painted a bleak picture of the education landscape in these three states, citing abysmal foundational learning rates of 11% or lower. Jigawa state fares the worst, with a paltry 2% of primary school learners possessing foundational reading skills and less than 1% having numeracy skills.
“UNICEF Steps in to Save the Day”
UNICEF is taking a proactive approach to address the crisis by supporting basic education in the affected states through cash transfers, tree planting campaigns, enrollment drives, and other interventions.
