The police brought forward accusations against Qudus Jokogbola, Siri Olawale, Edu Shakirat, Fausat Mohammed, Kafayat Ahmed, and Opere Morenike, charging them with conspiracy, breach of peace, and inflicting bodily harm.

According to Prosecutor Inspector Samuel Isholla, the alleged incident occurred on February 5, 2024, around 1:30 p.m., at Oba Akintoye Market, Lagos Island, Lagos State, involving the six defendants and two others who remain at large.

During the court proceedings, legal representatives S. Ade Oshodi and Ademola Olabiyi appeared for the defendants and the nominal complainant’s lawyer, respectively.

Prosecutor Isholla outlined the events, alleging that the defendants, in concert with the two individuals still at large, forcibly pushed and dragged Anjorin-Lawal, causing her physical harm and disrupting public peace.

The charges brought against the defendants are in violation of sections 168(d), 170(b), 411, and 413(2) of the criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015. Notably, Section 413(2) carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment for causing injury or harm to a person or their reputation.

Despite pleading not guilty, the defendants’ lawyer, Oshodi, advocated for their release on bail, highlighting their status as market traders and urging the court to consider leniency.

In response, the prosecutor emphasized the need for bail conditions that ensure the defendants’ presence in court.

Magistrate A.A Paul, exercising discretion, granted bail to each defendant in the amount of N200,000, with one surety each, who must be residents of Lagos State and provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government.

Until they fulfill their bail requirements, the defendants are to be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS).

The case is set to reconvene on March 11 for further proceedings.
