So who have we got? Let’s check out the present frontline aspirants that have structures on the ground to make an impact.

Here’s a brief guide to who they are, with some analysis on each of them from Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah.

For the APC we have Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kayode Fayemi, Yahaya Bello, Rotimi Amaechi , Prof Osinbajo, And Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

Ogbeni Aregbesola.

Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola (born 25 May 1957) is the current Minister of the Federal Ministry of Interior of Nigeria. A Two-time governor of Osun State. He is a native of Ilesa, Osun.

A very great personality and a strong grassroots leader, a former commissioner of works in Lagos State who worked assiduously to see to the emergence of Tinubu in 1999. The founder of  Oranmiyan, a strong grassroots network that saw to his emergence as Osun State governor. One remarkable thing about Rauf that makes me doff my hat for his political sagacity was when he delivered Nuhu Ribadu when he contested for the presidency, Osun was the only state won by ACN.

His chances for the presidency however is dependent on the aspiration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who happens to be his benefactor. He stands a good chance per adventure Tinubu does not declare for the presidency. Ogbeni can serve as a trump card for the Jagaban.

Prof Osinbajo.

osinbajo 1

A gentleman to the core, Oluyemi Oluleke “Yemi” Osinbajo (born 8 March 1957), is a Nigerian lawyer and politician, he’s the current vice president.

Yemi Osinbajo was Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice from 1999–2007,  finesse impersonified, believed to be a loyal and dedicated personality to the advancement and unity of Nigeria. His chances are bright as the current Vee-Pee but however, his aspiration remains under the shadows of a Tinubu’s presidency. Maybe a backup plan if the Jagaban retreats.

Rotimi Amaechi.

Rotimi Amaechi 1

A two-time Governor of Rivers State and currently the Federal Minister of Transportation in Nigeria. Amaechi would likely go for a congress and slug it out with other aspirants in APC. His chances are slim in that Rivers State is a PDP enclave. Having your State in your political kitty is a criterion here actually.

Rotimi is stubborn and may go head on to prove a point, his political sagacity is never to be undermined. Looks focused on his battles and would always prove a hard nut to crack. He’s definitely going in as an underdog.

Yahaya Bello,

yahaya bello22

The strong man of Kogi politics and Governor of Kogi State, youthful and ambitious. Yahaya Bello would make a good choice as a youth representative but his affiliation with the North would rule him out. The APC would zone the presidency to the South no doubt and this would limit his chances. Although he would not back out due to the zoning formula, already he has kicked against the zoning formula.

Yahaya Bello is fully involved in the presidential battle. Yahaya Bello may end up as APC National Chairman one day, but his chances of clinching the ticket are just like the chances of the Super Eagles winning the world cup anytime soon.

Yahaya Bello would make up the figures.

Kayode Fayemi

Kayode Fayemi Nigerian Headline Today

John Olukayode Fayemi, (born 9 February 1965) is a Nigerian politician who is currently serving as the Governor of Ekiti State. He previously served in office between 2010 and 2014 before losing re-election to Ayodele Fayose.

He was also the Minister of Solid Minerals Development in President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet. He is currently the chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum and may have the consent of a few Governors, but however, Fayemi may not get the backing of the South-West bloc which is controlled by the Jagaban. And also he would soon be leaving as Ekiti State governor and may therefore run out of steam. The presidency involves deep pockets when he serves out his tenure as Ekiti Governor he would have the necessary agencies to keep him busy for a while. whoever would venture for the presidency should be ready to face such hurdles.

Kayode Fayemi would not have his home base support as it is not likely the Jagaban bloc which controls the South-West would throw their support for his aspiration. He would face difficult hurdles and may not end up participating in the national convention.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

His introduction is usually this way, Assiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Jagaban of Borgu.

A two-time governor of Lagos State and the National Leader Of APC. If I have to place the odds on Tinubu then I would say we probably have a presidential flagbearer in waiting. The fact is that if you take away Buhari from APC it would remain Tinubu. Every person in APC today that beats his chest saying he has a structure can only bank on Buhari’s structure and not an individual one. Tinubu is APC and APC is Tinubu however the fact here is that Tinubu’s remains his only contention.

The Jagaban may decide not to contest and if that occurs then just know that whoever he backs takes the day. That again is not in doubt. Every other person mentioned above aside from Dr Kayode Fayemi, Yahaya Bello and Rotimi Amaechi may not feature against the Jagaban if he ever decides to contest.

Tinubu declaring for the presidency may be the biggest event of the decade and this statement may be an understatement. Tinubu remains the spice of APC but ‘ Man Proposes, God Disposes ‘ whatever makes TInubu declares means it is a fait accompli for APC to give him the ticket.

And if he declares and a few decide to slug it out with the Asiwaju then it would sure be an intriguing contest that would be translated to mean political Harakiri by his competitors.

If Tinubu doest not feature himself then be rest assured that his decision on who would wear the crown would be determined by his camp.

So far only Tinubu holds the Ace amongst the pack mentioned above.

Atiku Abubakar

Meanwhile, the PDP as of today is on a one-way ticket with Atiku looking likely to steal the show. The two-time vice president never dismantled his structure and has even gone ahead to inaugurate his inner caucus Nation Wide. Nobody in PDP can stand in Atiku’s way. Rabiu Musa Kwankwanso who happens to be a strong force in the PDP and a strong contender is currently tinkering with his membership of the PDP.

The betting odds remain high for an Atiku presidency in PDP. Let us keep our fingers crossed and see how all these plays out.
