“Local governments often operate on budgets that are insufficient to meet their responsibilities, limiting their ability to provide essential services like education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and sanitation,” he stated. Abbas emphasized the necessity of granting local governments a degree of autonomy to address community-specific needs effectively.

Speaker Abbas Criticizes LG Elections as ‘Disgraceful’

In a related development, Speaker Abbas has condemned the conduct of local government elections across Nigerian states, labeling them a “disgrace.” He expressed disappointment that these elections lack competitiveness, with ruling parties frequently dominating all positions, undermining democratic principles.

“Such elections not only mock democracy but also threaten its essence, allowing unqualified individuals to infiltrate councils, reducing them to extensions of state governments or tools for political godfathers,” Abbas remarked.

He called for immediate reforms, urging transparency, fairness, and integrity in local government elections to strengthen governance and foster grassroots development.
