Tensions Eased, Trade Revived: Nigeria’s Bianca Ojukwu Seals Historic Accord In Ghana

In a move widely described as both strategic and timely, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, embarked on a diplomatic visit to Ghana on July 30, 2025, to meet with her Ghanaian counterpart, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as part of a peace-restoration and fact-finding mission.

According to IReporter Online, the visit followed rising tensions fueled by youth-led protests in Ghana over alleged social crimes reportedly committed by foreign nationals, including Nigerians.

Directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Bianca’s visit was not only diplomatic but also symbolic, aiming to reaffirm Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to the historic socio-economic ties between the two West African nations.

What made the visit especially impactful was Bianca’s charismatic approach and royal bearing, which helped calm the heated atmosphere—particularly surrounding the Igbo Diaspora traditional institution in Ghana, which had come under media fire by bloggers allegedly sponsored by jealous local elements.

Her presence was seen as a dignified rebuttal to the smear campaign against Eze Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu (Ezeigbo Ghana), the symbolic leader of the Igbo community.

Discussions between Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Hon. Ablakwa focused on shared values of peace, unity, mutual respect, and economic cooperation.

According to IReporter Online, the Ghanaian Minister expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s swift and mature diplomatic response, adding that President John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to ECOWAS protocols and emphasized zero tolerance for xenophobia.

In response, Bianca expressed deep appreciation to the Ghanaian government, security forces, and citizens for their restraint and understanding, which helped prevent a diplomatic standoff.

Her words and engagement resonated strongly with both Nigerian and Ghanaian citizens, helping to ease emotional tension and reaffirm goodwill between the two countries.

According to IReporter Online, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu also held a town hall with the Nigerian community in Ghana, where she clarified that the Eze Ndigbo title is purely ceremonial—meant to foster unity among Igbos in the diaspora.

She emphasized that such titles do not override traditional leadership back home, as Eze Igbos worldwide remain loyal to their native kings upon return.

During her meeting with President Mahama, he explained that traditional rulers in Ghana are officially recognized through gazette listings, while any “foreign king” is regarded as purely ceremonial.

Notably, the Igbo community had hosted the New Yam Festival peacefully for 12 consecutive years prior to the current tensions.

In her closing remarks, Bianca urged unity among the Nigerian community in Ghana: “I urge you all to come together and avoid rancour. Stop working at cross purposes so that you can attain your goals here.”

Meanwhile, Njoku Macdonald Obinna, Publisher of 4th Estate Reporters, noted that Nigerian lawmakers—Senator Osita Izunaso and Hon. Canice Chigozie Nwachukwu—also visited Ambassador Dayo Adeoye, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana, to pledge support for the preservation and celebration of Igbo culture abroad, particularly the annual New Yam Festival, a rich expression of Igbo heritage.
