including incitement to violence and funding terrorist activities in Nigeria.
After his arrest, Ekpa was held under a detention order from the Päijät-Häme district court, accused of spreading terrorist propaganda via social media.
The group of five has been in custody since November 2024, but sources have informed The Nation that Finnish authorities have decided to release two of Ekpa’s co-defendants. The identities of the released individuals and the reasons for their release remain undisclosed at this time.
Despite the release of his associates, government officials confirmed that Ekpa remains in custody, though they declined to provide further details.
This development follows the formal request for Ekpa’s extradition by the Nigerian government, as confirmed by Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa. He stated that the required documentation for Ekpa’s extradition has already been sent to Finnish authorities.
Gen. Musa added that legal actions would be pursued and emphasized that the necessary steps have been taken to ensure Ekpa’s extradition is processed.
The Finnish government is reportedly working in collaboration with Nigerian authorities to tackle the violent activities of IPOB in Nigeria’s southern regions.
